UNISON University of Brighton Branch Strike Action
University UNISON members on the picket line
On 10 and 11 March, support staff at the University of Brighton are due to go on strike after rejecting a below-inflation pay offer.
The 1.4% rise awarded in August 2025 falls far short, with inflation still near 3% and living costs rising. Staff are effectively earning less, so members overwhelmingly backed strike action.
The University budgeted for a 3% increase, leaving around £900,000 that could go toward pay.
Public services, especially universities, are being defunded as the money is spent elsewhere, or not collected from the wealthy in the first place. While universities face funding pressures, senior managers’ pay and money spent on directors and consultants (for the purpose of outsourcing services) tell a different story.
UNISON branches at Manchester Met and Bristol have already taken strike action over pay, with more likely to follow.
We fully expect our members will support the picket line: send them messages of your support, or turn up to the demonstrations to help out. The solidarity that backs colleagues in struggle today is the same collective strength that protects your own job, pay, and conditions tomorrow.
